Suncadia Breaks Ground on 1,000 Steps Project

Scenic Mountain Stairway Provides River Access and Sightseeing Opportunities

Roslyn, Wash. (August 5, 2013) – Suncadia, a year-round mountain resort community located 80 miles east of Seattle, took its first step of 1,000 in its 1,000 Steps project. Suncadia broke ground on Monday, July 22 for the steps, which will create 21 flights of stairs connecting The Lodge to the Cle Elum River. Covering an elevation change equivalent to the height of a 19-story building, the 379 stair steps provide resort guests and homeowners with convenient access to river activities and a scenic walkway.

“The 1,000 Steps project enhances access to the Cle Elum River and complements the abundance of outdoor activities offered year-round at Suncadia,” said Roger Beck, managing director of Suncadia. “With scenic overlooks, picturesque seating areas and a beautiful destination, 1,000 Steps offers a rewarding and active experience for resort guests and homeowners, whether they relax on the landings or venture down to the river.”

The new project features 379 stairs made from colored concrete and covering 197 vertical feet of elevation change. 150 Dark Skies compliant LED low lighting fixtures illuminate the walkway without detracting from the night sky and four expanded landing areas provide seating and views overlooking the river valley. At the base of the stairs, a trail connects to Riverfront Park, providing resort guests and homeowners with more convenient access to river activities and pedestrian access to the Lodge from Suncadia’s Tumble Creek neighborhood.

The project manager of the 1,000 Steps project is Jodi Polak of Suncadia and Belsaas and Smith Construction, Inc. from Ellensburg, Wash. is the construction company. The project is expected to take an estimated three months with completion slated for November 1, just prior to Suncadia’s annual Winterfest celebration, which will take place from Thanksgiving to mid-January 2014.

The 1,000 Steps complements Suncadia’s 6,400 acres of recreation, lodging and dining offerings. Suncadia is the only resort of its kind to feature championship golf on two resort courses – Rope Rider and Prospector – and a winery within its boundaries, Swiftwater Cellars, which crushes grapes on-site and offers premium Swiftwater Cellars’ wines. Seasonal activities and events at the property include the annual Summer Outdoor Movie Series, Harvest Festival and Winterfest, miles of hiking and biking trails, winter ice skating, guided fly fishing tours, paddle boards rentals and much more. The Swim and Fitness center offers leisure pool, whirlpool spa, dual waterslides and fitness equipment, while Glade Spring Spa features nature-inspired spa treatments to relax and unwind.
