Suncadia is celebrating the autumn season with their 5^thAnnual Harvest Festival featuring a host of activities spanning two weekends in October.  The festivities will occur at Suncadia's historic Nelson Dairy Farm both weekends. 

This free, family-friendly event will feature live entertainment, wagon and pony rides, interactive contests, arts & crafts for kids, and a maze built from hundreds of straw bales.  A 5k fun run and kids obstacle course, a canine costume contest, and a pumpkin patch fundraiser provide festival attendees with great ways to support local non-profit organizations.  Suncadia will host a variety of unique outdoor exploration activities as well.

Mushroom Hunting 101 with Dr. Denis Benjamin

Learn about the basic biology of a mushroom and how to identify, collect, store and prepare them.

Saturday, October 16, 2010, 1-3pm, at the 5th Annual Suncadia Harvest Festival located at the Historic Nelson Dairy Farm.

Biography - Dr. Denis Benjamin

Dr. Benjamin recently retired as Medical Director of Pathology and Laboratories at Cook Children's Medical Center (Fort Worth, Texas). His interest in mycology goes back to his days at the children's hospital in Seattle where he was consultant to the regional poison center and an avid amateur mycologist. He spent a sabbatical at the Royal Botanic Garden's in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he completed a book on the health effects of mushrooms (Mushrooms; Poisons and Panaceas W.H.Freeman and Co, N.Y. 1995). He was a member of the Puget Sound Mycological Society, and the chairman of the Toxicology Committee of the North American Mycological Association. He is currently writing a series of stories about the natural history of mushroom foraging.

He grew up in South Africa, and moved to Seattle in 1970 to complete a residency in pathology at the University of Washington. After twenty five years at Seattle Children's Hospital he spent the next decade in the north Texas heat and sun. He is finally 'back home' in the Pacific Northwest.
